Method: cleaner cleaning (deodorant recipe?!)

Bad news first. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer May 25, 2011. She had a normal procedure, in which a nosy surgeon took a small sample of something suspicious and sent it for testing, unbeknownst to her and probably saving her life. By the time she came in for a follow-up appointment, the news was back.

I think in the coping of something like that, we search for answers and we search for ways to help, to do something, to do anything that will make it stop. We do rational things. (I made a bigger commitment to spending time with family and eating better.) And we do perhaps irrational things.  (I threw away my microwave in the dead of night and stopped using commercial cleaning solutions.)

My concern is that something is poisoning all of our mothers. And until much smarter people than myself, with many acronyms after their names, figure out what is making us sick, I’ll be using the toaster oven and buying essential oils.

All purpose cleaner:

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • juice of one lemon
  • 2 cups water

Furniture polish:

  • tea white vinegar
  • 1/2 tea coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Floor cleaner:

  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • capful of rubbing alcohol
  • 2 drops dishwashing soap
  • 15 drops essential oil
  • 2 cups hot water (more if you have a bigger house than I do : )

Deodorant:

  • 2 TBS coconut oil
  • 2 TBS corn starch
  • 2 TBS baking soda
  • 10 drops of essential oil

These are easy, cost-efficient and control freak-ish ways to clean, be happy, hopefully healthy and make your house smell deliciously of your favorite smell. My house smells of rosemary all the time now.

My mom will make it. I know this because she is the happiest and most positive person I know. All of life’s bumps give her a better, bigger and brighter garden, longer walks with her dogs and the best perspective I’ve ever heard. She makes me hope everyone has someone like her in their life.

Happy cleaning : )
